NFP Time Once Again
10-03-2024The indices were not too far from unchanged at midday in somewhat dull trading, as we wait for the all-important, speculator-favorite nonfarm payroll report tomorrow. Then in the afternoon, the market just leaked a little lower.
Away from stocks, yesterday's weakness in the yen was precipitated by the new prime minister wannabe saying that the BOJ won't be hiking rates. I don't think that necessarily means much, but it certainly had an impact on the FX market. As for today, green paper was a little stronger while fixed income was weaker once again. The metals were mixed in pretty volatile trading, with silver gaining 0.75% and gold losing about $2 with the miners mostly lower.
Welcome a Board
In company-specific news, readers of Ask Fleck will know that I've been inundated with questions about Wesdome, so to head off more of that, I will comment on today's announcement of a new director, which was at least on paper the best new hire that I've seen there. He was CFO at Kirkland Lake during a period where it did very well and I'm assuming he has a good grasp of capital markets, since he worked hand-in-hand with Tony Makuch, who I believe does as well.
This may go part of the way toward alleviating some of the angst people have had about the board, because a permanent board chair will have to pass muster with the newest director, who I think is more capable than most of the others. Bottom line: it's good news.
Positions in stocks mentioned: long WDOFF.
